Jasper Philipsen won Kuurne – Bruxelles – Kuurne on Sunday, and after the race Tim Wellens spoke to Cycling Pro Net, reflecting on the race and his team’s efforts.
“Yes, we knew we didn't have to wait for the sprint. We tried and went pretty hard in the hilly zone, but then we only escaped with two. Then we rode to the breakaway and we turned pretty good in the breakaway. The tempo was good, but in the end, the sprinter teams were stronger than us.”
When asked if the issue was too many sprinter teams or not enough allies in the move, Wellens explained, “I think if we jump with a few guys, then we have a big chance. With two, it was not enough.”
Reflecting on his personal performance over the weekend, Wellens remained positive, “I felt good, I felt good. I know yesterday was a strange race, but it's not that the tempo was so slow.
“The watts were pretty high for me, maybe because that headwind made it much easier to follow, but I'm happy with my weekend. We don't have really a result as a team, but we tried, and they cannot win every race.”
