Movistar have lost Annemiek van Vleuten as a dominant figure but they have mantained an aggressive performance at Flèche Wallone Féminine. The German
Liane Lippert rode to second on the day, near a meaningful win for the Spanish team.
“Second is a good result. I am especially very proud of how we rode as a team. We wanted to create a different race dynamic today. The plan was to put SD Worx under pressure," Lippert said in a post-race interview. “We decided with Annemiek to open the course a little earlier. This worked out well, as SD Worx had to waste energy to come back."
The early attacks of Annemiek van Vleuten were an attempt to put ultimate favourites SD Worx under pressure, which worked successfully. However the brutal nature of the Mur the Huy saw most teams dedicate their efforts into the summit finish, and in a head-to-head Demi Vollering proved unbeatable. "We went for the win today, but finishing second behind Vollering is a good result. She is currently one of the best riders in the world," Lippert added.
A late acceleration saw her move into second place, a strong result but just behind the top step. However this was a motivating performance, which leaves the 25-year old hopeful of a result at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. “No, in Liège it is even better if you have two cards to play with. We form a good duo and it runs smoothly," she concluded.
