Jonas Vingegaard remains 2:42 behind Tadej Pogacar at the 2026 Tour de France after Team Visma | Lease a Bike deliberately moved its leader away from the chaotic sprint battle in Bergerac.
With consecutive flat stages completed, Vingegaard remains Pogacar’s nearest challenger before the race turns back towards more demanding terrain and the next major GC test at Le Lioran.

Visma steer Vingegaard clear of technical finale

Stage 8 had passed without significant danger for the overall contenders until Liam Slock was caught immediately before the final kilometre. His capture brought the sprint trains together on an approach containing two sharp corners.
Visma initially moved Vingegaard towards the middle of the peloton around the final classified climb, where several riders attempted to create movement. Once those attacks had been neutralised, the team allowed its leader to drift further back and away from the fight between the sprint trains.
“The guys supported Jonas really well today,” sports director Marc Reef said in Visma’s post-stage release. “From the final climb onwards, we positioned ourselves a bit more towards the middle of the peloton. There was some movement there, but in the end everything stayed together. Heading into the finale, we moved a bit further back and everyone made it to the finish safely.”
Tim Merlier won the sprint ahead of Biniam Girmay and Olav Kooij, while Vingegaard crossed the line without losing time.

Vingegaard carries second place towards next mountain test

There was no movement among the leading general classification contenders. Pogacar retains yellow, with Vingegaard second and UAE Team Emirates – XRG’s Isaac del Toro third at 3:27.
Remco Evenepoel follows at 3:30, with Juan Ayuso fifth at 3:34. Vingegaard therefore holds a 45-second advantage over Del Toro in the battle behind Pogacar.
The peloton must first negotiate the shortened Stage 9 from Malemort to Ussel, reduced to 155.5 kilometres after Correze was placed under a red heatwave alert. Monday’s first rest day then precedes Stage 10 from Aurillac to Le Lioran, where Vingegaard and Visma will face their next major examination in the mountains.
