Jonas Vingegaard has spent much of this Giro d’Italia being questioned, measured and second-guessed. After his time trial disappointment, the illness confirmation from Visma | Lease a Bike and Afonso Eulalio’s stubborn hold on pink, the race now reaches the kind of mountain terrain where the Dane is expected to answer.
Vingegaard did not hide behind the usual cautious language of a Grand Tour favourite before Stage 14. Instead, he made clear that Visma had identified the brutal mountain stage towards Pila as one of the days to move.
“To be honest, I’ve looked forward to it a lot. Since I saw the parcours of the Giro, I saw that it is one of the hardest ones,” Vingegaard told Eurosport, before adding: “It’s not too long, but in the end, you can make damage tomorrow, I think.”
Asked whether it was a stage Visma had marked, his answer was even clearer: “Yeah, we did already before the Giro. At the start of the Giro we need to choose our days and tomorrow is a chosen day.”
For TNT Sports analysts Adam Blythe and Matt Stephens, that directness stood out immediately.

“You can expect fireworks”

Vingegaard starts the day 33 seconds behind Eulalio in the general classification, with Thymen Arensman, Felix Gall and Ben O’Connor still close enough to ensure the fight for pink is not only a two-man story.
Stage 14 piles up repeated climbing before the final ascent to Pila, offering Visma a chance to use their mountain depth and force a more attritional race than the controlled stages of recent days.
Blythe believes Vingegaard’s comments pointed towards something bigger than a defensive ride. “A day to mark and to get a stage win. To take a lot of time and really open that race up,” he said on TNT Sports. “That will be the worry - does Jonas want to take as much time as possible tomorrow, or is he just going for the stage win? Or both? It might go hand in hand.”
The former British champion felt the warning should immediately raise expectations around Visma’s intentions. “But if he’s saying that, you can expect fireworks tomorrow,” Blythe added.

Stephens stunned by rare Vingegaard clarity

Matt Stephens focused on how unusual the moment felt. Vingegaard is rarely a rider who speaks in bold pre-stage declarations, particularly before a day that could shape the whole race.
“Quite often from the top contenders, they are not exactly glib but they play their cards close to the chest - we’ll see how it goes, see what the other teams do,” Stephens said.
This time, there was little room for interpretation. “That was the most emphatic, unambiguous statement that I’ve heard Jonas Vingegaard say, ever,” Stephens continued. “He doesn’t give a lot. He’s a lovely lad, so relaxed. ‘This is the chosen day’ - that should strike fear into everybody.”
Vingegaard did not promise the maglia rosa. He did not say Visma would attack from distance. But he made it clear that this was a pre-selected day, and that the team believe real damage can be done.

Giro reaches a defining mountain test

Stage 14 is not only about the final climb to Pila. Saint-Barthelemy, Doues, Lin Noir and Verrogne all come before the summit finish, creating a day where fatigue can build long before the decisive move.
Vingegaard has won two stages already, but he still has not worn pink. Eulalio has continued to survive, Arensman has moved firmly into podium contention, and doubts around Vingegaard’s condition have not disappeared completely despite Visma saying the illness issue appears under control.
Now the race returns to terrain where the favourite is expected to be at his most dangerous. Stephens summed up the mood around Vingegaard’s warning with one final line. “For him to say that in such a calm, almost menacing way. I love it.”
For Eulalio and the rest of the Giro contenders, the message is clear enough. Visma have marked the day. Vingegaard has said as much. Stage 14 now has to reveal whether that warning becomes the moment the race finally bends towards the pre-race favourite.
