Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team's teenage sensation
Leo Bisiaux has powered to an incredibly impressive victory on stage 3 of the 2025
Vuelta a Burgos, denying the likes of
Giulio Ciccone and
Isaac del Toro to take a first pro win and the leader's jersey.
With the peloton chasing a six-man breakaway at the front, Belgian Sander De Pestel of the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team was the notable outlier of the attackers, surrounded by a quintet of Spaniards. As the race entered the final 50km, things started to split up in the breakaway. On the Puerto de Ozeka, De Pestel proved himself among the strongest, riding clear with Gorka Sorarrain of Caja Rural - Seguros RGA.
With 36km to go, the first big attack of the GC group came in the form of a move by the returning Mikel Landa, racing his first race since crashing out of the Giro d'Italia with a fractured vertebrae. Although Landa created initial separation, he was soon caught by the bunch on the Puerto de Orduña. De Pestel meanwhile, was now solo at the front on the final climb.
The casualties of the climb were starting to mount up in the peloton too. Among others, GC leader Roger Adria and Best Young Rider Jordan Labrosse were both dropped from the peloton. At 25km to go, De Pestel was finally caught, but the Belgian made his final effort telling, helping to fire his young teammate Leo Bisiaux up the road with Giulio Ciccone.
By the time they reached the top of the climb, Bisiaux and Ciccone had been joined by Giulio Pellizzari, Lorenzo Fotunato and Isaac del Toro, forming an all-star group at the front.
With the quintet having around 30 seconds of advantage over their nearest chasers, a group that included Egan Bernal among others, it was full gas to the finish line. The gap was still around 30 seconds as the five at the front entered the last 5km too, meaning the stage win was almost certainly going to one of them.
In that fight for the win, it was then Leo Bisiaux who proved strongest, taking the victory ahead of Ciccone in a thrilling finale.
