Tadej Pogacar on Stage 10 of the 2026 Tour de France
The 2026 Vuelta a España doesn't have, at the time being, any major star confirmed in its startlist to fight for the red jersey. The idea that Tadej Pogacar will race it this year looms large, and according to Monaco's prince Albert, the Slovenian said that he would take part in the race.

Tadej Pogacar reportedly said he would race La Vuelta

The Slovenian is currently at the Tour de France, leading it and heading towards a likely fifth yellow jersey win. The decision to race La Vuelta will be made after the race, as the team has argued all year long. But what if the decision has already been made?
"Tadej Pogacar said he would be at the start, so I hope so," prince Albert said in words to the media this morning at the start of the stage in Dole. With the Vuelta beginning in Monaco, the statement carries a strong level of importance.
"I also hope our compatriot Victor Langellotti will be at the start. Another rider who trained in Monaco is also at Ineos, Colombian Brandon Rivera. I hope Monaco is also being talked about from a sporting perspective."

A return after 2019?

In previous years, a return to the Vuelta has been a constant point of discussion around UAE Team Emirates - XRG. The Spanish Grand Tour was where he made his debut back in 2019, racing to third place in the overall classification and taking three stage wins.
In both 2024 Pogacar raced the Giro before the Tour, but both in that year and 2025, there was heavy speculation that he could be at the Gran Salida.
Last year, the preparation for the Tour and the heavy fatigue that he suffered from during the race was a strong factor in his absence.
Previously, Pogacar's pursuit for the World Championship titles came in the way as he preferred an ideal preparation towards the race, but with two consecutive rainbow jerseys in the pocket, completing the Grand Tour list could be his top priority.
A resident in Monaco, Pogacar could well take to the 'home' start as a similar opportunity isn't likely to occur again in the coming years.
