Stefan Kung may not have secured a medal in the World
Championship Time Trial on home soil in Zurich, but the Swiss rider remains
positive after a solid performance in front of his local fans.
Küng, one of the favourites for the event, felt the full
support of the crowd as he rolled out to start the race. Despite the high
expectations, he couldn’t find his rhythm on the challenging course.
“I had goose bumps at the start. It’s great to feel the
support of the crowd,” Küng told Eurosport after the race.
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into a good rhythm. The right flow just didn’t
come. I struggled from the beginning of the climb. So in the end, it was a long
and difficult ride.”
Earlier this month, the 30-year-old secured his first-ever
Grand Tour stage victory with a stunning win in the Stage 21 time trial at the
Vuelta a España. Fans had hoped Küng would replicate that form in Zurich, but
it wasn’t to be on the day.
Despite missing out on a medal, Küng remains grateful for
the support and is already shifting his focus to the upcoming road race. “I
want to thank everyone for their support. I’m already looking forward to the
road race,” he added.
With the road race looming, Küng will have another
opportunity to deliver a memorable performance in front of his home crowd.
