On the 11th of October, the peloton takes on the final monument of the 2025 season: Il Lombardia. The Italian classic is the climbers' monument, the final of the season, and one of the last big races of the year.

The race has been a cornerstone of the sport since its first edition in 1905. It quickly earned the title Giro di Lombardia and became affectionately referred to as the Classica delle foglie morte — the “Classic of the Falling Leaves.” Over the decades, the race has built a rich legacy. Legendary Italian riders Fausto Coppi and Alfredo Binda both left their mark here, with Coppi holding the all-time record of five victories. Eddy Merckx, Sean Kelly, and more recently Vincenzo Nibali have also conquered the demanding terrain of Lombardy.

Over the past half-decade, Il Lombardia has become synonymous with one name: Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian sensation claimed his fourth consecutive victory in 2024, cementing his dominance in the season's final Monument with a devastating solo attack on the Colma di Sormano. The win, delivered with a margin not seen since Eddy Merckx in 1971, confirmed Pogacar’s iron grip on the race and his place in cycling history. Behind him, Remco Evenepoel and Giulio Ciccone rounded out the podium, but there was little doubt about the day’s main storyline.

His 2023 triumph came in similarly commanding fashion. Pogacar attacked on the descent of the Passo di Ganda, riding away from a chasing group to win solo for the third year in a row. Andrea Bagioli and Primoz Roglic were left contesting the minor places, while Pogacar celebrated another autumn masterclass. The year before, in 2022, the Slovenian had to dig deeper — this time holding off a fierce challenge from Enric Mas in a two-up sprint in Como. That edition was as much a farewell as a coronation, marking the final Monument appearance for legends Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde.

It was in 2021 that Pogacar first conquered the 'Race of the Falling Leaves', outsprinting Fausto Masnada after attacking on the Passo Ganda. That victory capped a year in which he’d already claimed both the Tour de France and Liège–Bastogne–Liège, adding another Monument to his growing palmarès. Before Pogacar’s reign, Jakob Fuglsang took a hard-fought win in 2020, on a reshuffled August calendar due to COVID-19. The Dane launched a decisive move in the closing climbs to hold off George Bennett and Aleksandr Vlasov, in a rare edition not decided on the traditional route into Como.

As expected, Pogacar returns in 2025, headlining the ambitions of UAE Team Emirates - XRG.
