BORA - hansgrohe have had a good day collectively today at the
Volta a Catalunya however they came up just a bit short on the stage win.
Sergio Higuita is sitting on the podium after a strong performance, and is still eyeing a possible win in the general classification.
"Today was a tough stage, right from the beginning. However, Jai and I were supported well by Toni, Martin and Ben, so I'd like to thank them for all their work. We knew that the final climb would be ridden very quickly. Right from the get go, there were several attacks, and I think that Jai and I reacted well to these," Higuita said after the stage.
Higuita was active in the final climb, responding to a move at the base when Arkéa pushed the pace hard, and also when Richard Carapaz attacked in the final three kilometers. However both moves were reeled in, but the Colombian still had the explosivity to surge through the final kilometer in front and was close to the win, finishing third in the day: "In the end, Carapaz tried to launch a move with 3 kilometres remaining, which was controlled by Almeida, who was very strong. In the finale, I tried to sprint as best as I could, but the others were simply stronger. However, I'm still happy with the result today and also that I've moved up to third overall."
Although he sits a mere six seconds behind Quintana and Almeida in the overall classification, Higuita will have a tough task to go through two of the world's best climbers. The final stage to Barcelona will likely be the day where that time can most likely be made up, and it will suit his attributes quite well.
