Sam Welsford takes a surprising sprint victory in Stage 6 of Vuelta a San Juan

Team DSM rider Sam Welsford won the 6 stage of Vuelta a San Juan. The Australian that has been doing a very low profile race since he crashed in stage 2, finally appeared at the front of the sprints and didn't miss the opportunity to take the win.

The race started with the withdrawal of Egan Bernal. The Colombian who was 4th overall left the race after complaints on his knee due to a crash he sustained in stage 1. A breakaway of 7 riders, with the likes of Juan Pablo Dotti (SEP San Juan) who was only 2 minutes behind Miguel Angel Lopez and Maximiliano Richeze (Argentina National Team) was formed after 30 km.

Due to the presence of Juan Pablo Dotti who was close to the leader, Medellin-EPM had to pull the peloton fast, helping the sprinter teams. Max Richeze is doing his farewell race and the veteran sprinter who did most of the career has a lead out rider tired this time on a breakaway. Eventually with the help of other teams interested in the sprint, the break was caught almost 15 km to the end.

The stage ended with a bunch sprint with the Australian Sam Welsford corresponding well to his team work on the last kilometer. The fast man from Team DSM beat Fernando Gaviria (Movistar Team) and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) on in a very disputed sprint, possibly the best sprint we had so far in San Juan.
