Official routes and profiles for the 2026 UEC European Championships have been confirmed - including the men's and women elite road races and individual time trials. Slovenia plays host to the championships, and Tadej Pogacar will certainly be licking his lips at the announcement as he seeks to defend his title - with a decision on participation set to be made after the Tour de France.
Set to be held over October 2nd to 7th later this year, 14 events are scheduled with the elite road race routes to roll out from Slovenia's capital of Ljubljana and finish in Šenčur. The event marks the first major cycling championship hosted by the country as they hope to attract the Tour de France for a future Grand Depart.
Both men and women road races feature a challenging parcours that will include repetitions of a steep 2.1-kilometer climb with an average gradient of over 10%, making the routes favourable to climbers and puncheurs. The time-trial is also going to favour powerful riders with the ability to get over some demanding gradients.

Route profiles to attract climbers

The main take-away for riders and coaches targeting the championships is that climbers - like Pogacar - can have fun on this terrain. Road races will feature a finishing circuit that includes the Možjanca climb (2.1 kilometers at 10.2%). The individual time trial route will also feature an ascent of the steep climb.
The elite men's race will go up the climb five times over 196.3 kilometers while the elite women's race will take on the climb twice over 130 kilometers. In both races, the final ascents of the climb top at roughly 13km from the finish making it a perfect launching pad for an attack.

The individual time trial takes in just over 22 kilometers in a course that will test riders' climbing, descending and power on a flat finish. Full profiles and routes for other races have yet to be confirmed by organisers.
In 2025, Pogacar won his first European title in the road race, while Remco Evenepoel added another title to his growing list of accomplishments in the time trial. In the women's races, Demi Vollering was dominant in the road race while Marlen Reusser took home the time trial title.
