Brady Gilmore of NSN Cycling Team won stage 7 of the Volta a Catalunya, a breakthrough victory as he beat Dorian Godon in the final sprint. The stage was marked by the heated GC fight in which Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz attacked Jonas Vingegaard several times.
The stage began with a breakaway of five riders featuring Brandon McNulty, Liam Slock, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Einer Rubio and Darren Rafferty. The stage was only 95 kilometers in length, with the first half being pan-flat and easy to control, mostly by Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe.
With 37 kilometers to go Remco Evenepoel launched a hard attack on the peloton in one of the ascents of the Montjuic, trying to still go for a GC win, a danger that Jonas Vingegaard knew was real and always close to follow. Everytime the riders would go up the very steep 900-meter long climb the peloton would split, and the attacks were constant.
Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz all were on the attack from the 40 to 25 kilometer to go mark, but ultimately they looked almost evenly matched and so there no gaps appeared between the main favourites. The breakaway had been caught in the meantime, and Tobias Svarre of Uno-X took the opportunity to attack off a small offensive group with 18 kilometers to go.
On the base of the penultimate climb Marc Soler launched an attack, followed by KOM rival Giulio Ciccone and Ben O'Connor. The trio caught Svarre and Ciccone attacked over the top, with Svarre getting dropped and a few riders joining from behind as Oscar Onley attacked once again and was followed by Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel.
On the final climb Luca Vergallito attacked, with the peloton staying oddly conservative. Enric Mas made a move at the top of the climb but the main favourites did not attack. Florian Lipowitz paced up the final ramp but the peloton stayed numerous, with Dorian Godon still present.
Red Bull led out the dangerous downhill sprint but Godon made it to the front just in time, sprinting to what seemed to be certain victory until from behind, Brady Gilmore of NSN Cycling Team sprinted from behind and took a breakthrough first World Tour win. Godon and Evenepoel were second and third whilst Jonas Vingegaard confirmed the overall win.
