Santiago Buitrago claimed victory at the 63rd edition of the
Trofeo Laigueglia, attacking from the front group in the closing kilometres before riding solo to the finish on the Ligurian coast.
The Colombian from
Bahrain - Victorious accelerated from a select trio with just over 10 kilometres remaining and gradually extended his advantage over Romain Gregoire and Antonio Tiberi, who had been his companions at the front of the race.
Despite a late chase behind, Buitrago maintained a small but decisive gap all the way to the line to secure the win alone in Laigueglia.
Race explodes on Colla Micheri after Vervaeke solo
Earlier in the race, Louis Vervaeke animated the day with a long solo move from the early breakaway. The Belgian had attacked from the lead group on the inland climbs and spent much of the race alone at the front, cresting Testico and Cima Paravenna first while holding an advantage of nearly three minutes over the peloton.
However, the chase intensified once the race reached the finishing circuit around Laigueglia. The peloton gradually closed the gap before Vervaeke was finally caught as attacks began on the steep slopes of Colla Micheri.
From there, the race split rapidly. Multiple accelerations reduced the field before Buitrago, Gregoire and Tiberi emerged as the strongest riders on the climb and moved clear together.
The trio worked briefly to hold off the chasers before Buitrago launched his decisive move with around 11 kilometres remaining.
The Colombian quickly opened a gap and continued to increase his advantage over the final kilometres, sealing the victory with a solo finish after the final ascent of Capo Mele, which crests just over a kilometre from the line.
