Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe have their under-23 team present at the Giro di Sardegna and this afternoon it was one of its talented Italian riders who managed to take the win. Davide Donati is already a proven winner, but has further cemented his status as a sprinting power today on stage 2 of the race.
The second stage of the race was quite unusual when it came to the breakaway formation, as despite the lack of any apparent features on the route, there was no official group going up the road early on. There were several attempts, but always a peloton interested in bringing them back.
With around 40 kilometers to go the peloton faced a 9% climb in which the attacks could not be controlled, and fearing another GC makeover, everyone wanted to be present. But the nine-rider group lacked Soudal - Quisk-Step riders and was then reeled back in; Before Filippo Zana and Gianmarco Garofoli of the Belgian team tried getting their revenge for the previous day.
A new group was formed at the head of the race, missing the race leader Nicolò Garibbo initially. From this, Astana's Darren van Bekkum attacked with 17 kilometers to go, but behind the junction of groups saw the race stabilize. The Dutchman was caught with a few kilometers to go, but despite the flat finish, the small group and lack of sprinters led to an uncertainty that saw several riders attacking ahead of the sprint.
The catch was made with only 300 meters to go, and in a very technical finish it was Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Davide Donati who took to the front ahead of the final corner, and sprinted to victory. Gianmarco Garofoli, in the absence of sprinters, sprinted to second to capture some bonus seconds whilst Boje Patrick Frydkjaer was third.
