The Vuelta a Espana was a race that Primoz Roglic was trying to win for a record-breaking fourth consecutive time this summer, but it ended abruptly as he crashed out of the race on the 16th stage after attacking the race and taking time on Remco Evenepoel.
This is not the first time he crashes out of a Grand Tour, with the Tour de France having a similar finale. Roglic didn't sustain fractures, but had lengthy contusions and road rash throughout several areas of his body. He was also losing significant amount of blood due to an injury on his elbow, a consequence of the high-speed crash.
In an Instagram post Roglic has thanked all the messages of support and shared that he is "slowly recovering and thinking about the future". He is carrying a lot of bandages on the right side of his body on the elbow, leg and hip area.
The World Championships and Il Lombardia might had been on his plans following the Vuelta where he should be a main favourite for both races, however this crash may have terminated his season. It is yet unknown if he is thinking of returning to racing at the end of the 2022 season, but chances seem low at this point in time.
