The Giro d'Italia has begun today and there was a surprising amount of debutants at the start line, ranging from ages 21 to 33. It is an interesting statistic that almost 1 out of every 3 riders that have started today's stage had never previously raced at the Giro d'Italia, and are getting their first taste of it in the eastern European nation of Albania.
More precisely, 32% of the peloton has made their debut today - 59 out of 184 riders. This includes some of the biggest figures in the race such as Juan Ayuso, Isaac del Toro, Joshua Tarling, Paul Magnier, Tom Pidcock, Ethan Hayter, David Gaudu, Wout van Aert and Kasper Asgreen.
The oldest debutant in the race is Quentin Pacher who has made his pro debut 10 years ago but is only starting his first Giro now at age 33. At age 29, Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team's Milan Vader is the oldest Grand Tour debutant at the start list.
