Paul Magnier has sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the 2024 Tour of Britain, moving into the early race lead as a result, thanks in part to a brilliant leadout by Remco Evenepoel and Julian Alaphilippe.
Three riders got themselves in the breakaway early on. With 50km to go however, the leader's numbers had already dwindled to just two, with the peloton only around a minute behind. Heading into the final 25km though, things were all back together in the peloton.
With the INEOS Grenadiers and Soudal - Quick-Step controlling things on the front of the bunch, a sprint finish seemed the only realistic ending to the day and that was exactly how things turned out. In the fight for the line, it was Paul Magnier who powered to victory ahead of Ethan Vernon, benefitting from an expert leadout from Remco Evenepoel and Julian Alaphilippe.
