Rarely has such an all-star field congregated for a Grand Tour such is the case at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana and with the second week kicking off with a potentially decisive individual time-trial, Jumbo-Visma are putting the pressure onto ITT world champion, Remco Evenepoel.
With Sepp Kuss in the Red Jersey and both Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard well positioned, is easy to put forward the argument that it's advantage Jumbo-Visma. Sports director Grischa Niermann however, has a differing viewpoint. "We have Roglic, the Olympic champion, and Vingegaard, the rider who won the time trial in the Tour by force majeure," he explains to Sporza. "But on this course the world champion has a small advantage."
Whether or not Evenepoel will be able to overturn the near two-and-a-half-minute deficit he has on Kuss remains to be seen, but the chances of that gap being cut are high. "Remco certainly has the advantage," says Niermann. "We don't want to lose time, but we do take it into account. It is a fairly fair time trial, not too technical. It is a real challenge."
"As long as Sepp is in this position, there are 3 leaders. Will he keep that up? We'll see tomorrow," he concludes. "We want to win with the team. We know and we accept that our leaders prefer to win themselves, even Sepp secretly dreams a little bit. But our job is for our team to win. It is not uncomfortable at the table. They get along well."
