Despite taking a stunning win on just his fourth day of racing since last year's Vuelta a Espana,
UAE Team Emirates's
Juan Ayuso was modestly pointing out how bad his legs felt post-stage.
"I'm getting better, but my legs feel worse every day," Ayuso reveals in a post-race interview taken immediately following his first World Tour win. "I'm suffering a lot and I feel like the form isn't there yet. But if I keep improving in the race, that would be great. We have to see if I can win the round here. In any case, I'm happy that I seem to be getting better every day, even though it feels like I'm working on the limit."
The fact the 20-year-old is racing this well after such a lengthy absence caused by a persistent bout of tendonitis should be a scary prospect for everyone else in the peloton. “I went down full throttle. I knew it was close and that by taking risks I could take the win," Ayuso explains.
The Spaniard was the eventual winner of the stage by a comfortable margin over second place Matteo Jorgensen of the Movistar Team and Ayuso now also hold the overall lead of the race after three stages.
