One of the most intense topics of this off-season in Spain is the choice of the new national team coach. José Vicioso, president of the RFEC, is looking for Pascual Momparler's successor, and all eyes are on Alejandro Valverde - which surprises Movistar manager Eusebio Unzué.

'El Bala' is the great favorite to become the new 'chief engineer' of the Spanish National Team for the future. This leaves Valverde's continuity in Movistar Team up in the air, as combining the two seems a difficult task.

For that reason, Eusebio Unzué's words on the matter were going to be important. The manager of the Spanish team does not rule out that Alejandro Valverde could be in both places: "I was happy. It's true that logically he couldn't be with us in the same way, but certain things yes, obviously maintaining neutrality".

"I was surprised how excited and willing he was to accept this challenge, and that is something vital to start something in life," added Unzué, aware that practically nothing can convince Valverde to turn down the coaching position if he has it on the table.

As a former World champion, it seems that Alejandro Valverde is the perfect candidate to lead the Spanish national team in the coming years in search of another world title. However, that doesn't mean things are going to get any easier, as Eusebio Unzué tells.

"These things are concrete days," he points out about how chaotic World Championships are. "For him sometimes it was easier to do things than to tell, but I think the time has also come to give voice to the amount of things and great advice that he can bring to it. We will help him to make the decision that he thinks is best for him". A decision should be made soon, and be between Valverde and another former World Champion Óscar Freire.
