After a frantic day in Mallorca, UAE Team Emirates - XRG's Jan Christen has taken victory at Trofeo Calvia 2025 ahead of Astana's Christian Scaroni and another UAE man Antonio Morgado.
Despite some very attacking and aggressive racing over the course of the day, as the race entered the final 50km, the peloton was still largely intact and at the head of the race. Shortly after though, an attack led by Nairo Quintana broke free. As a small counter joined and increased the group's number to 11, suddenly they were 20 seconds clear of a peloton that was looking for others to chase. At just under 35km to go however, this promising attack was also snuffed out and the peloton regained control.
The next move came from Alessandro Covi, with the likes of Christian Scaroni and Martin Marcellusi also among the six-man group to force their way off the front of the bunch. As the road started to rise again though on the Coll de sa Gramola, the group's hopes were again dashed by the accelerations behind at around 26km to go.
In particular, the XDS Astana Team had been relentlessly attacking during the day and on the descent of the Coll de sa Gramola, Scaroni again was on the move, this time alongside teammate Clément Champoussin and Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Frederik Wandahl. Despite the numbers advantage being with the Astana duo, it was Wandahl that started the next little rise solo at the front of the race. Just as the Dane summited the climb at 13km to go though, Scaroni got back in contact.
At 10km to go, the leading duo had around 30 seconds on the nearest chase group that included Jan Christen, Antonio Morgado, Marc Hirschi, Roger Adria and a few others. Christen though, wasn't waiting for the group to make the catch and attacked solo by himself. At 7.6km to go, the UAE Team Emirates - XRG youngster caught the leaders and immediately tried to go over the top, but couldn't quite drop Wandahl and Scaroni. Behind meanwhile, Hirschi and Morgado were both attempting to bridge the gap.
Into the final couple of kilometres and Hirschi was definitely closing the gap. The question was, would he run out of road? At the front meanwhile, they knew they couldn't play games too early and with 900m to go Christen attacked and immediately dropped both Wandahl and Scaroni. In the end, Scaroni held on for 2nd as Morgado took third.
