Vuelta a Espana
Granada has emerged as the definitive choice to host the final stage of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana, following a dramatic shift shaped by political decisions and calendar clashes. Reports from both local and national outlets confirm that the iconic finish traditionally held in Madrid was ruled out because it coincides with the city’s Formula 1 Grand Prix, leaving no viable space or logistics for the race’s arrival.
The situation was further complicated by the collapse of the alternative plan to finish the race in the Canary Islands, which until very recently had been the leading candidate to host the race.
According to regional authorities, the key issue was not financial or technical but political. The Gran Canaria Island Council expressed clear opposition to hosting the Vuelta if the Israel-Premier Tech team were to take part, accusing the squad of “whitewashing a genocide”.
This dispute became central to the negotiations. Antonio Morales, president of the Gran Canaria council, stated unequivocally that without excluding the team, “Gran Canaria will not host the Vuelta”. With no agreement possible, organisers were forced to abandon the plan for a Canary Islands finale.

Granada steps in as the new favourite

With the island option withdrawn, organisers have now turned their attention firmly towards Granada. Current proposals include two decisive stages in the province: a penultimate day in medium or high mountains, making full use of the climbs and descents around Granada, followed by a final urban stage in the city itself. There is also the possibility of the route passing near landmarks such as the Alhambra, subject to permit approval.
Sources close to the discussions suggest a third stage in the region is also under consideration to maximise the sporting spectacle and wider regional impact.
Local media such as Granada Hoy have reported the development, and national confirmation from Cadena SER indicates that both the city and province are positioning themselves to deliver a high-profile finale. Sierra Nevada is therefore expected to host the decisive showdown of the 2026 edition.
The official route announcement will take place on 17 December during the Monaco presentation, where the full layout of the race is traditionally revealed. Rumours suggest the 2026 edition may be promoted under the striking tagline “Monaco–Granada”.
After the 2025 Vuelta bypassed the south of Spain entirely, the return of the race to Andalusia — and with such a spectacular finale planned — is being widely welcomed.
