The
UAE Team Emirates rider has had a tough time despite being an ever-present figure in most of the classics, however today it was his day to raise the arms in glory as
Matteo Trentin conquered a tough edition of
Le Samyn.
“It was a really good race, extremely hard and aggressive from start to finish. As a team we knew we didn’t want it to finish in a big bunch sprint as there were some fast finishers there," Trentin said in a post-race interview. Despite being one of the most complete riders in the peloton, Trentin has struggled over the last few years to grab important wins, with the only one since 2020 has started being Trofeo Matteotti last season. In Belgium today, he returned to his winning ways with an impressive performance.
After attacking throughout the final hour of racing, he found himself in the right move that went clear with 24 kilometers to go. From within the group, Trentin had made several accelerations with no success leading to the thought that it would be complicated in a sprint for the Italian who has lost his edge over the last few years, however he took the wheel of Dries van Gestel and managed to sprint into the win beating Hugo Hofstetter.
He concluded: "Attacks really started from about 50km out, first I went away in a group of 25 and it gradually got narrowed down to just just a few of us. I think today I really tried to make the race instead of following and it worked out well for me in the end.”
