He stated he was looking forward to wearing number 1 and returning to the Giroexpecting to be team leader. When they announced Vinge was going for the Giro, Yates became domestique. Not even a joint team leader. I suspect this is not the support he envisaged from the team. After winning the Giro, hence his decision to leave them in the muir.

He had stated he was looking forward to wearing number 1 and returning to the Giro. I suspect, when he said it, he was expecting to lead the team. Once Vinge was announced as leader, Yates was then going to have to become a domestique. I suspect this had a bearing on his decision to suddenly retire. His reward for winning the tour was to then be a domestique as reigning champion, not the support he expected.
