Team SD Worx - Protime's Lorena Wiebes has taken a historic victory at Milano-Sanremo Women 2025, powering to the finish line ahead of Marianne Vos in a thrilling finale.

Three riders managed to get themselves up the road and into the break, Anne Knijnenburg (VolkerWessels Women's Pro Cycling Team), Laura Tomasi (Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi) and Virginia Bortoli (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo). By the time the climbing began with the Capo Mele at around 50km to go however, Knijnenburg was a solo leader, with both Tomasi and Bortoli caught by the peloton, who were already closing to within a minute of the front of the race. Soon after, Knijnenburg too has been swallowed up by the bunch.

As the race reached the foot of the Cipressa, the peloton remained tightly locked together. Although the fierce pace being set at the front of the peloton was causing difficulty for many at the back of the bunch, no attacks came out of the group, boosting the hopes of the fast finishers such as Lorena Wiebes, Elisa Balsamo and others.

On the descent though, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot came to the fore, pushing the peloton on the downhill. Strangely though, the main rider caught out by Ferrand-Prevot's move was the French star's own Team Visma | Lease a Bike teammate Marianne Vos. On the flat before the Poggio though, things did eventually come back together, thankfully for the Dutch legend Vos.

As the Poggio began, Blanka Kata Vas immediately took to the front for Team SD Worx-Protime, although she was soon overtaken by Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig of CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto. The first big attack though, came from French national champion Juliette Labous. Neither were able to properly snap the elastic on the climb though.

On the descent, Demi Vollering started to come to the fore for the first time, taking control at the front of the bunch. It was Elisa Longo Borghini who launched the most dangerous move though, getting clear separation into the final 2km. As world champion Lotte Kopecky turned domestique in the finale, the Belgian was working hard to bring back Longo Borghini and inside the final few hundred metres the catch was complete. In the sprint, it was then Lorena Wiebes who powered to the win ahead of Marianne Vos!

Well that was boring and predictable. Let's hope that the men's race is a little more exciting.
