Lorena Wiebes is well accustomed to crossing the finish line with her hands in the air. In fact, the 26-year-old now has 98 professional wins on her palmares. Few, if any though, will have meant quite so much as a history-making Milano-Sanremo Women 2025 victory taken by Wiebes in Saturday afternoon in Italy.

After neither the Cipressa nor the Poggio could create a meaningful gap within the pre-race favourites, it was Elisa Longo Borghini who launched the most dangerous move on the descent to the line, getting clear separation into the final 2km. As world champion Lotte Kopecky turned domestique in the finale, the Belgian was working hard to bring back Longo Borghini and inside the final few hundred metres the catch was complete. In the sprint, it was then Wiebes who powered to the win ahead of Marianne Vos.

"This is one of my best wins of my career," reflected Wiebes in her post-race interview afterwards. "I already felt strong on the Cipressa. When I crossed the top of the Poggio among the first five, I knew I was going for the win."

"Elisa Longo Borghini's attack was very strong, but I knew Lotte Kopecky was right behind me. Lotte rode a very strong lead to catch Longo Borghini back," Wiebes continued, paying tribute to her Rainbow Jersey wearing teammate's work in the finale. "In the sprint, Marianne Vos surprised me a bit by attacking early, but I had a quick response. After the Strade Bianche I stayed in Italy to prepare for this race. Last week I scouted the final very often. That good preparation is now paying off."
