Thibaut Pinot was close to the win today in Châtel, but had to settle with a fourth place after cracking in the final slight ascent. The
Groupama - FDJ climbers described the day, in which he went on the attack for the first time.
“I’ve got some regrets because I could have attacked a bit earlier but it’s always easier to find that out afterwards," Pinot said in a post-race interview. "I’ve believed in the victory. But the last climb wasn’t hard enough, especially in the last three kilometres. It was flattening at some point and we rode on the big chainring again."
Pinot found himself in the right move of the race early on in the day, and would eventually see the peloton give liberty for the escapees to fight for the stage win. The Frenchman is chasing a stage win and had an opportunity today, but decided to wait until the ascent to Pas de Morgins to make the difference.
He attacked from the chasing group and went solo after Bob Jungels. He reduced the gap from 2:00 to 0:30 minutes in the hardest section, of the climb, however when the gradients lowered the Frenchman's advantage came to a halt. "It broke my rhythm. Jungels has more strength than me on such a terrain and I had produced a brutal effort to regain around two minutes just before," he said. Pinot would end up cracking in the final ascent after a gruelling effort, finishing fourth then behind Jonathan Castroviejo and Carlos Verona.
"It reassures me on my condition though," Pinot says positively. "I see that I still lack a bit of energy but it’s a good sign that I’m getting better and better. In the second and third weeks, there are stages that suit me even better," he concluded.
With the Alpine stages under way he will have more opportunities, namely at the Alpe d'Huez where in 2015 he took what was perhaps the most important win of his career.
