World, Belgian, Olympic and now, once again, the European time trial champion. Remco Evenepoel has done it again to prove himself undoubtedly the best rider on the planet against the clock, dominating the European Championship TT ahead of Filippo Ganna.
Denmark’s Niklas Larsen was the first rider to impress, producing a blistering opening sector with 7:55 at the first intermediate, seven seconds clear of Dylan van Baarle. He carried that momentum into the second checkpoint, clocking 14:16 — 18 seconds ahead of van Baarle and 20 clear of Rémi Cavagna — before stopping the clock in 29:34 at the finish. Although not considered among the headline favourites, Larsen’s ride ensured he spent a long spell in the hot seat as others struggled to dislodge his benchmark.
The main contenders then began to roll off the start ramp, with a cluster of riders posting near-identical times. Mads Pedersen briefly held the best mark at the opening split with 7:54, just one second ahead of Larsen, while Mathias Vacek came through only a second slower again. Joshua Tarling then pushed the standard higher with 7:51, before Filippo Ganna underlined his intentions by going two seconds faster still at 7:50.
Yet it was Remco Evenepoel who tore up the script. The Belgian, chasing a historic sweep of World, Olympic and European titles, immediately opened a 14-second gap on Ganna at the first checkpoint.
Despite riding without working race radio Evenepoel’s pacing looked flawless. Within 15 minutes he had already overtaken Stefan Küng, one of the most respected time trialists in the peloton, despite starting a full minute after the Swiss rider.
By the second intermediate, Evenepoel’s dominance was clear. He stormed through in 15:52, establishing the best time of the day and putting himself firmly on course for gold. Küng could only watch as the rainbow jersey flew past. Ganna later overtook Jakob Söderqvist during his ride, while Dylan van Baarle crashed and was unable to continue effectively.
By the time Tarling reached the finish line, he landed just outside of Larsen's time, keeping the Dane in the hotseat for a little longer. Finally though, he was then usurped as a flying Ganna came in 25 seconds quicker. Victory though was Evenepoel's and there was never really any doubt about that.
