Stage 2 of the Vuelta a España was a calm day on the bike, with an incredibly fast finale. The uphill sprint to Manosque saw Matthew Brennan take the win after Wout Van Aert attacked followed by Tadej Pogacar. The UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider maintained the red jersey, despite provisionally losing it to Ethan Hayter at the start of the stage.
The day featured a relatively flat profile, starting off in Monaco and finishing in Manosque. A regular sprint stage, except for the finale that featured some uphill ramps that could thin down the peloton before the expected final sprint.
Koen Bouwman, Diego Uriarte, Sinuhé Fernández and Ethan Hayter formed the day's breakaway. The presence of the latter proved to be crucial for the day's story, as capturing bonus seconds from the day's intermediate sprint could see the Briton jump into the race lead after he finished on the same time as Tadej Pogacar the previous day.
Hayter did in fact go solo off the front with 49 kilometers to go, whilst UAE Team Emirates - XRG didn't attempt to stop the Soudal - Quick-Step rider. He crossed the intermediate sprint in first place, getting himself in the provisional race lead; whilst Wout Van Aert sprinted to second as he also attempted to move into the red jersey.
The Briton was caught right after, with 34 kilometers to go. The calm peloton then moved towards Manosque, where the intensity slowly ramped up. The sprint looked to be the likely scenario, but Visma changed things up.

Wout Van Aert attacks

Int he technical slight ascent, Wout Van Aert attacked out of one of the hairpins, a massive acceleration with the response of Tadej Pogacar. Alessandro Romele bridged across, but the trio were caught in the 1-kilometer to go banner as there was no collaboration.
Finn Fisher-Black launched an early sprint, followed by Matthew Brennan. Mads Pedersen launched his sprint then on the uphill gradients, but despite the length of the effort, he was no match for the Visma rider who had such explosivity that no-one could even follow him in the sprint to the line.
Pau Miquel was second and Tadej Pogacar was third on the day, finishing ahead of Mads Pedersen. But Pogacar ended the day in the red jersey as Hayter was caught off guard and arrived a few seconds behind the peloton at the fininsh line.
