Although, Lennard Kamna and BORA - hansgrohe tried to be positive and ride on the front foot during stage 8 of the Giro d'Italia, the German was ultimately forced to pay the price as he slipped to 10th in the general classification.
"I was maybe a little over-motivated at the end. I felt really good and wanted to try something. But in my attack I overdid it a bit and then had to pay the price," the 26-year-old lamented to the official website of BORA - hansgrohe following the conclusion to stage 8. "Still, I'm happy because my form is really good and the race is still very long."
With Primoz Roglic becoming the first of the GC riders to put the pressure on, Kamna initially was able to join the Slovenian. As the Jumbo-Visma leader continued to set an infernal pace however, Kamna was unable to hold the wheel and ending up sliding backwards and finishing 22nd on the stage, 34 seconds down on Roglic and 20 seconds down on a group containing the likes of Remco Evenepoel and João Almeida.
"To be honest, of course the guys are not super happy with the way the stage played out, because we are fully focused on the general classification. We really wanted to remain with the other GC contenders," explained the team's sports director, Enrico Gasparotto. "They may have made a little mistake and overpaced on the first part of the last climb. But it's always better to give it a try than to merely follow. Tomorrow, we're looking forward to the time trial, it can be a good stage for Lenni, and I just hope that the weather will be good, so we can make the most out of the day."
