After a disappointing cobbles classics campaign, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team were left looking for results elsewhere. Once the dominating team in the cobbles, they have faded in the last few years slightly with the rise of riders like Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. Yves Lampaert has talked about the spring, and his contract hopes.
“I try to forget the spring as soon as possible and to look ahead. I got sick pretty early in the season. People expect you to be 100 percent right away when you return, but that's not possible," Lampaert said in an interview with Sporza.
A crash at Paris-Roubaix whilst he was in contention for the podium was the killer blow to Lampaert and the team's cobbled classics campaign. He managed to hold on with a tenth place but disappointment ruled over the block. "That was a shame, because I could have straightened out my season there. It looked very spectacular, but luckily I didn't have any problems physically," Lampaert said regarding the final race of his season.
The Belgian however does not yet have a contract for 2023 and worries that his spot may be compromised. "I want to show in the coming weeks that I am worthy of my place," he said. "I want to put things right in the coming matches... Hopefully I will prove that I am worthy of a place in the Tour de France," Lampaert added, where he is likely to be in leadout service for Fabio Jakobsen.
He wishes to stay with 'The Wolfpack' where he's been at since 2015. "It's still early in the season, I haven't talked to Patrick Lefevere yet," he says however. "Other teams have already contacted me, but I'm still waiting."
“Of course, there is a price for every contract. I hope that I am valued by the team and that they do not forget what I have already done," he concluded.
