EF Education-EasyPost manager Jonathan Vaughters has revealed that one of the team's riders, Lachlan Morton has Mark Beaumont's around-the-world record in his sites, potentially targeting 2024 for his attempt.
In an interview with Cycling Weekly, Vaughters revealed that Morton had initially aimed to make his attempt towards the end of 2023. World events however have thrown a spanner in the works, “What we wanted to do was to try the around the world record [in the second half of 2023], but the sticking point on that right now is Russia,”
Long distance specialist Mark Beaumont, the current record holder achieved the feat in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes back in 2017 and for Morton's attempt to class as an official attempt the Australian will need to ride in the same direction for a continuous 29,000km (18,000 miles), something Beaumont described as “the longest two and a half months of my life”.
To become the new world record holder, Morton will need to average more than 386km (240 miles) a day. Despite the arduous task in front of the former Tour of Utah winner, his boss Vaughters claims Morton is "very keen. It’s just that I don’t think it’s going to happen in 2023.”
