Towards the top he cracked, as the group kept a high pace over the top specially as Richard Carapaz - the new race leader - attacked. López ended up in a difficult position, by himself for the rest of the stage. He shed 4:25 minutes as the pace never slowed down, but nevertheless finished inside the Top10 of the stage after making it in the crucial move.
His stint as race leader came to an end, however the Spaniard was still happy about his performance: "I don't have words for this stage because it was super hard. Like I said before I did my 100% and tried to defend the maglia rosa but eh, what can you do? I enjoy every day, every kilometre, and I'll also enjoy tomorrow."
