BORA - hansgrohe have taken the Giro d'Italia by the horns today as they attempted to blow up the race in the explosive circuit next to Torino. The plan was clear, to cause splits and chaos early on and potentially expose the issues of some riders in the harsh heat.

"It was a pretty crazy day. We had a bold plan, and tried to isolate the other GC riders early. The team was just phenomenal today," the Australian said after the finish. Hindley climbed up in the overall classification after today, however he admits that he had higher hopes for the German team's raid.

"I'm admittedly a little disappointed that I couldn't get the win in the end, but I have to say a huge thanks to the whole team for their amazing support," he said after the stage. BORA launched an all-out raid with around 80 kilometers to go, splitting the already fatigued peloton in a descent and causing João Almeida - between others - to loose contact with the peloton and be in severe trouble. However the Portuguese came back to the GC group, in which the team, and specially Wilco Kelderman put in a very long effort to never ease off the pace.

Towards the end of the stage Hindley attacked himself up Superga, and then again to bridge across to new race leader Richard Carapaz on the last classified climb of the day: "Carapaz didn't look very strong at the beginning, so I was surprised when he launched his attack. I thought he went a bit too early, so I waited patiently and then I was able to catch up, along with the group." He ended up doing so, and then taking second place at the finish - he now stands only seven seconds behind the INEOS Grenadiers rider.

"I ended up taking second on the day and now in GC. I'm proud to be part of this team and thanks again to the guys for the excellent support," he concluded. Hindley has another opportunity today in the Valle d'Aosta to create the difference, however with such small gaps he has the space to let the race be decided in the final week where he is expected to be in his comfort zone in the longer ascents.
