Juan Ayuso is only 19 years old but he's sitting second in the overall classification after having a strong finish to the
Volta a Catalunya's second stage. The Catalunya native will be motivated to perform this week, as he is the best placed rider of the
UAE Team Emirates.
"It was hard to get clear on the last climb as there was a strong headwind but I think O’Connor timed it well so hats off to him for staying away. I tried two or three times but I couldn’t forge a gap, it’s a pity we couldn’t close him in the final, but we came close," Ayuso said in a post-race interview.
Ayuso was an active rider in the ascent to La Molina, however he missed the perfect timing for his attack. He won the sprint for second place in the peloton, which has boosted him to second place in the GC and the lead of the youth classification.
"It will be another hard day tomorrow but the legs are good so we’ll give it another shot," Ayuso concluded. Despite being a neo-pro, the Spanish talent has shown enough evidence that he has the legs to contest races inbetween World Tour level.
Tomorrow's queen stage of Catalunya will see Ayuso go in with ambitions and possibilities of jumping over to the race lead, however he's not the only card as
João Almeida is also sitting in ninth spot in the overall classification. George Bennett and Marc Soler will also be possible jokers for the race's hardest stage.
