The peloton reeled in the break however in the entrance of the final climb, where the lack of tough gradients saw the lack of real differences created. It was a stage for the opportunities,
Ben O'Connor attacked with 8.5 kilometers to go and the first serious attack proved the most successful as there was no proper order in the peloton. O'Connor kept his gap stable at around 20 seconds. Marc Soler attacked in the peloton but didn't have the legs to bring the Australian back, and with the peloton still far, O'Connor managed to bring in the win.
The peloton came to the line shortly six seconds after lead by
Juan Ayuso and
Nairo Quintana. O'Connor is also the new leader of the race now, heading into the queen stage.
