Joshua Tarling abandons 2026 Vuelta a Espana as courageous return to racing following family tragedy ends early

Joshua Tarling’s 2026 Vuelta a Espana is over, with the Welshman’s departure confirmed around Stage 6 on Thursday. The precise circumstances remain unclear, and Netcompany INEOS have yet to confirm a reason for his withdrawal.
Tarling had opened his Vuelta with an emotional third place in the 9.4-kilometre time trial through Monaco. He briefly occupied the hot seat before being beaten by Ethan Hayter and Tadej Pogacar, eventually finishing four seconds behind the Slovenian and collecting the white jersey as the leading young rider.
“I needed to distract myself,” Tarling said afterwards. “Thanks to my family for giving me the blessing to come here and just do another bike race.”
The 22-year-old lost 1:41 on the uphill finish to Manosque on Stage 2 before riding through the abandoned third stage and conceding further time in Andorra. He finished Stage 5 in the final group, 10:46 behind winner Matthew Brennan.

Tarling’s presence in Monaco had remained uncertain until Netcompany INEOS announced their squad two days before the race. His younger brother Finlay died aged 19 following an accident during Stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal on 14 August. The family then suffered another bereavement when Josh and Finlay’s grandfather Gerald died days later.
Tarling chose to start the Vuelta in honour of his brother, with the full backing of his family and team. His parents explained that Finlay had been enormously proud of his older brother and loved watching him compete.
Before the race, Netcompany INEOS director of racing Geraint Thomas made clear that starting did not commit Tarling to completing the three weeks. The team would support any decision he made as the race progressed. “We’re under no illusions here,” Thomas said on the Watts Occurring podcast. “It’s a bit of a risk for him and the team, him starting. If he thinks it’s the wrong decision after two days, then he can go home, obviously.”
Thomas also acknowledged that there was “no right and wrong” way for Tarling to respond to what had happened. No injury, illness or other explanation has yet been given for his withdrawal, bringing an exceptionally difficult and emotional Vuelta appearance to an early conclusion after five completed stages.
