Remco Evenepoel's spring was only three weeks long, starting with a victory at the Brabantse Pijl mid-April and concluding with another victory at the Tour de Romandie. However the results and mainly performances in between those two triumphs were eyebrow-raising.
"He expected to ride a better Liège-Bastogne-Liège, you shouldn't beat around the bush about that. In Romandie his prologue was good, the days that followed he was actually also good," says José De Cauwer at Sporza.
"And then you think that the signals are good and that things are getting better. And then another bad day comes. Actually, that's all normal," he notes, referring to the fact that Evenepoel had far from perfect run up to this season. "But still, expectations are always that little bit higher."
Now a long training period is up ahead of Remco who targets the Tour de France this summer. Would it help his mentality to have done better at Liege and Romandie in exchange for not winning Brabantse Pijl? "It's not the same indeed. The mental feeling will be a bit different. But Evenepoel also emphasized that he has only been training for two months after being out of action for four months. And there is certainly still enough time towards the Tour."
