Tadej Pogacar took no time to light up
Paris-Nice. Despite not being easy terrain to thrive, already on stage 1 the
UAE Team Emirates rider launched an opportunistic offensive.
"Jonas said halfway through the stage that he might want to continue after the bonus sprint, and we also got a gap," Pogacar said in a post-race interview. However the gap was small and the chase fierce, eventually the attack did not continue. "So that was not enough. There was also a headwind.”
Pogacar had been active in the day's toughest climb where Neilson Powless attacked with over 20 kilometers to go, but on the hilltop close to the finish which had bonus seconds at the top Pogacar didn't wait for anyone. He took the 6 bonus seconds, with Vingegaard taking none despite challenging for the spring. However, the duo and Pierre Latour kept riding along ahead of the peloton.
“I saw that Jonas wasn't riding along, so I knew I shouldn't continue. I straightened up and decided to save some strength. Then it was clear that it was going to be a sprint and I crossed the finish line safely,” he continued. The attack was reeled in eventually, but the Slovenian has delivered a first hit.
“I felt a bit shit this morning. But every hour it got a little better and I hope it will continue to do so in the coming days," he concluded. Pogacar will have a pan-flat day tomorrow where the action should stay reserved to the sprinters.
