Wilco Kelderman finished third in the third stage of the Tour de Pologne. This is the second time the Dutch rider has finished on the podium in this World Tour race, following his second-place finish in the opening stage. Meanwhile team leader Jonas Vingegaard finished ninth and successfully defended his overall lead.
"I’m satisfied with the fact that I retained the leader’s jersey on this hot day. I managed better than the last time I wore the jersey in this race," Vingegaard said in a press communication after the stage, referring to the 2019 edition, when the Dane won the penultimate stage of the race, but on the last day completely fell through the standings to finish outside the top-40.
The first three stages were also the decisive ones for the general classifcation. There will be one more threat awaiting riders on the penultimate day of racing on a stage that will finish with a steep climb to Bukovina mountain resort.
Vingegaard seems to be more than happy to give his teammates chances to chase their own success in what is very possibly the Dane's last race of this season. "With Wilco’s third place and maintaining our lead, we had a good day as a team. The start of tomorrow's stage won’t be easy, but I think it will be a day for the sprinters. Nonetheless, we have to stay alert. Hopefully, I can hold on to the lead in the coming days."
Vingegaard currently holds a 19 seconds advantage over Diego Ulissi while Vingegaard's teammate Wilco Kelderman is another second further down in the standings. Other riders have bigger gaps and thus it'd take a rather large offensive to shake up the current standings in the remaining stages of which most are expected to end with a mass sprint.
