João Almeida came to the Giro d'Italia with high ambitions, and he has battled for the win. In the end he settled with a third place, but with another consistent Grand Tour he achieved a strong result, this time around finishing on a podium for the first time, being the first Portuguese rider in decades to achieve this.
“It feels pretty special to finish on the podium in this company. I hope to be back on the podium again in the future. I’m still growing as a rider and keen to see what’s coming in the next years," Almeida said after finishing the race in Rome. Winner at Monte Bondone, he took another step in his evolution there too. His consistency saw him in the fight for victory until the very last days of the race, however in the final two mountain stages he could not match the level of Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas.
"I had a really good team by my side and some days you could see it on the TV and even sometimes you don’t see it but they were always there for me and without them it would have been impossible, also for the hard work behind the scenes of all the staff. It’s a team effort and one I’m very proud of," Almeida concluded.
The 24-year old was the winner of the Youth classification, beating Thymen Arensman and Andreas Leknessund, which earned him another trip to the podium. What follows is certainly another dig at the Vuelta a Espana he has said it himself, with the Tour de Pologne likely to be raced as well as he looks to get back the title he obtained in 2021.
