João Almeida came to the
Giro d'Italia with high ambitions, and he has battled for the win. In the end he settled with a third place, but with another consistent Grand Tour he achieved a strong result, this time around finishing on a podium for the first time, being the first Portuguese rider in decades to achieve this.
“It feels pretty special to finish on the podium in this company. I hope to be back on the podium again in the future. I’m still growing as a rider and keen to see what’s coming in the next years," Almeida said after finishing the race in Rome. Winner at Monte Bondone, he took another step in his evolution there too. His consistency saw him in the fight for victory until the very last days of the race, however in the final two mountain stages he could not match the level of Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas.
