Jasper Philipsen secured his place in Belgian cycling history by winning the opening stage of the 2025 Tour de France in Lille. With a flawless leadout from Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates Mathieu van der Poel and Kaden Groves, Philipsen surged to victory in the sprint finish, earning the yellow jersey for the first time in his career.
The win marked Philipsen’s tenth Tour de France stage victory and extended his streak of winning stages in four consecutive editions, from 2022 through 2025. He now joins a small and distinguished group of Belgian riders who have achieved that feat of winning stages in four editions of the Tour in a row.
Sylvère Maes did it between 1934 and 1937. A two-time overall winner, Maes took the general classification in both 1936 and 1939. Eddy Merckx managed the streak from 1969 to 1972, part of a dominant run that included 34 stage wins and five overall titles.
Walter Godefroot completed his four-year stretch from 1970 to 1973, ultimately winning 10 stages in his Tour career and adding stage victories at the Giro and Vuelta. Wout van Aert achieved the milestone most recently, between 2019 and 2022, with memorable wins on Mont Ventoux, the Champs-Élysées, and in time trials, though he’s now gone three years without a stage win.
