The Tour de France is the stage where some of the most emotional wins take place in pro cycling, and today was a prime example. After 12 years as a pro rider, Canadian Hugo Houle took his first international pro win at the Tour with an impressive display of power in the first Pyrenean stage.
“I never won a race. I guess it was the right place to win my first race!" Houle said after what was his first pro win outside of national championships. The 31-year old had given good indications over the last few years, however the time to take a pro win at international level came today, in none other than a mountainous day at the Tour de France.
Houle had finished third into Saint-Étienne proving he had the form to take a big win, and today as he found himself in front once again alongside Michael Woods, Israel - Premier Tech had the firepower to fight for the win. Houle attacked in the descent of the Port de Lers, and was never to be seen again by his breakaway companions.
"I attacked to set it up for Michael Woods. I went full gas. I hanged on and suffered in the steep climb. I knew that with 30’’ or 40’’ lead at the top, I could do it," he described. The climbing prowess he has developed allowed him to go over the final climb still in front, and with Michael Woods in the chasing duo victory was certain for the Israeli team. "It was still a long time to go with an advantage of only 20’’ but I never gave up. In the technical sectors, I gained some time".
"I was afraid to cramp towards the. I missed some food because I had no assistance car in the last 20km," he added. Houle made it to the line however with a comfortable gap, for a very emotional win.
He dedicated his win to his brother who passed away ten years ago in a tragic hit-and-run accident. "To win a race was a dream I had for my brother who died ten years ago. I’ve work for him for years, it’s incredible. I don’t know what to say," he concluded.
