While Remco Evenepoel grabbed the headlines today by securing his first-ever victory in theAmstel Gold Race after a dramatic sprint against Mattias Skjelmose, a separate tragedy was unfolding further down the road. Veteran
Pello Bilbao,
who is set to retire at the end of the season, seemed perfectly positioned to fight for the final step on the podium. However, a mechanical failure at the worst possible moment shattered his dreams, leaving the heavily disappointed rider to cross the line in fifteenth place and reflect on a monumental missed opportunity.
For most of the day, things were going exactly to plan for Bilbao and
Bahrain - Victorious. The team navigated the tricky, narrow Dutch roads well, keeping their leader out of trouble and near the front of the peloton. When the weather took a turn for the worse and the rain started falling, they maintained their solid positioning. However, right as the race entered its decisive phase with about 40 kilometers remaining, Bilbao realized he had a problem with his bike.
"It was going so smooth that I couldn't believe it. The team was great, especially when the rain started. We were moving super smoothly in the front. And yeah, at the critical point, around 40 kilometers to go, I had a flat tire in the back wheel," he said in a
post-race interview.
Getting a flat tire during the finale of the
Amstel Gold Race is always a major issue. Because the peloton was already breaking apart over the constant climbs, the team cars were stuck a long way behind the riders. Bilbao tried to keep pushing on the flat tire to stay in the mix, but he quickly dropped out of the lead group containing Evenepoel. He then tried to hang on to the second chasing group, but the lack of air in his rear tire made it impossible to take the corners safely.
"I thought it was possible to survive, but then I already lost the first group with Remco. And then I tried to follow the second group, but in every corner, I was losing the wheel. I couldn't hold it. I was raising my hand, but the cars were too far."
The 2026 Amstel Gold Race podium
Frustration over a wasted team effort
By the time Bilbao finally managed to get a wheel change, the race had completely split apart, and his chances of fighting for a podium result were gone. He ended up finishing 15th, a result that doesn't reflect the physical form he had today or the amount of work his teammates put in during the early stages of the classic.
"Everything split, and yeah, it was a pity. In the critical moment, with good legs, I just didn't have the chance to change the wheel on time. But yeah, we did our best. It's a pity when you take risks for 200 kilometers and you see your teammates working so hard and doing everything perfectly, and then just bad luck takes you out of the race."
