Geraint Thomas is a long-standing veteran in the peloton, and after several complicated years, he bounced back to surprise into a third place at the 2022 Tour de France, a result that has seen him back on the spotlight in surprising fashion.
“It was nice to participate in the Tour de France again this year. People thought I was no longer able to compete with the better," Thomas said in an interview with Cyclingnews. "It's always extra motivation to show that you can still do it. I feel like I have nothing to prove now.”
“It was a very refreshing year for me. I have ridden a number of new races such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Flèche Wallonne and the Tour of the Basque Country, races I had never or almost never ridden before," he said, perhaps leading to a motivational spike that saw him win the Tour de Suisse and lead the British team at the Tour.
The sentiment of achievement after his Tour success appeared to be decisive, and despite rumours of departure, he renewed with the British team for another year. 2023 may be his last year in the peloton, as he undergone a path similar to that of Richie Porte who has hung up the wheels thisyear.
“We have yet to decide. It may be my last year. I want to make the most of it," Thomas added. “Honestly, I don't even know if I'll do the Tour, maybe I'll do the Giro. I wouldn't mind doing something else.”
