The wait for a stage win goes on for Wout van Aert at the 2023 Tour de France after another disappointing finale for the Belgian on stage 8 saw him finish in third.
“I made an error of judgment in the sprint by waiting a little too long," said the Jumbo-Visma in his post-stage interview, going some way to explain just what went wrong on this occasion. “Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen passed me when Christophe Laporte fell silent. Then I had to brake. I make up a few more lengths, but fell short. He expected me to pass him on the right, while I was on the left side of the wheel. Then I was overtaken from behind. Yes, that's my own fault. I did feel like I had the legs to win, I've had that all week.”
This marks the fourth occasion in eight stages that van Aert has achieved a top 10 placing. He admits he's finding it hard to not get frustrated. “Of course there will be days when we have to work for Jonas, but I hope to wipe away that zero for myself and for the team," he explains. "We also get a kick out of taking victories and that should not be for the time being. For the time being it is just not the Tour and that is a pity.”
"It was something that suited me. Because the leading group had divided it well, the final was also difficult. That was all to my advantage," he continues. "Tomorrow is another super hard day, then a rest day and then I will see what the second week brings.”
