"I'm never going to do that again" - Geraint Thomas rules out doing two Grand Tours in the same year in future

Having recently signed a two-year contract extension with the INEOS Grenadiers, Geraint Thomas will be sticking around as the team's GC figurehead for a little while longer.

A former Tour de France winner, Thomas has four total Grand Tour podiums to his name, including most recently at the 2023 Giro d'Italia where he lost out to Primoz Roglic by just 14 seconds in the battle for the Maglia Rosa. In his second Grand Tour of 2023 however, Thomas was unable to recreate this form, finishing 31st overall and failing to successfully switch targets to stage hunting.

This isn't the first time that Thomas has struggled whilst riding a second Grand Tour of the year either. Back in 2015, the Welshman raced both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana. At the Tour, Thomas helped Chris Froome secure the second of his four Maillot Jaune victories. However, after Froome crashed out of the subsequent Vuelta, Thomas was unable to produce any results in his leaders' absence.

Speaking at Rouleur Live, Thomas revealed he never wants to ride two Grand Tours in the same season again. "It's the first time I've gone for two Grand Tours in the same year, that was a massive learning experience," he recalls. "Not that I'm going to use it, because I'm never going to do that again," he laughs.
