Stefan Bissegger was one of the main attractions of the third stage of the Tour of Switzerland. The Swiss rider jumped into the breakaway early in the race and tried his luck solo with 30 kilometers to go. In the end, he was caught up by the peloton with ten kilometers to go.
Bissegger was on the move together with Manuele Boaro, Philippe Gilbert, KOM classification leader Quinn Simmons, Joey Rosskopf, and Mathias Reutimann. After Boaro and Reutimann had to let go, the Swiss pace-setter made two attempts to continue alone, eventually succeeding with 33 kilometers to go.
"I knew the final stretch, so I knew where to try. The leading group didn't function so well anymore, the speed dropped and I had to try. I tried twice and got away," he added. Bissegger is one of the riders that could thrive in such scenario, but the fatigue from the day and the relentless chase in the peloton saw the time-trialist fail in his attempt to win the stage.
"It was close, and half a minute or a minute more would have been enough. It is what it is. If you don't try anything, you don't win," Bissegger said. "My form is not bad, as everyone could see. It's going well, hopefully, it will be even better in the Tour," he concluded.
