After getting himself in the day's breakaway at
Tirreno-Adriatico's stage five, Warren Barguil was in the 12-rider breakaway that went on to fight for the stage win alongside teammate
Clément Russo. Barguil had launched a stinging attack with 21 kilometers to go, only followed by Benjamin Thomas the first time up the final climb into Fermo. Despite being caught, the Breton had gotten the confidence he needed to go on the attack again, and he did so with 4.7 kilometers to go, starting the final ascent with a gap over his breakaway companions.
"I had good legs in the climb. I already did the first lap the wall with Benjamin Thomas. I was waiting for a good moment, at one moment the speed was going down and I attacked from the back... then I was giving everything, I saw the group was coming back on the wall. I said ok your finish is on the right turn, I gave it everything to there and I saw nobody," he said jokingly. "My legs were really fucked, but I made it," he concluded.
