Magnus Cort thinks that Jonas Vingegaard should follow in his footsteps, but not into retirement. Instead, the Danish veteran believes that a move to Uno-X Mobility later in his career is something that can rejuvanate the Visma | Lease a Bike rider.
The two time Tour de France winner is contracted with Visma until the end of 2028, meaning he could potentially hit the market at 31-years-old. However, during the Tour, he admitted that he came close to retirement last month after negotiating a deal with is team to allow for a greater life balance and autonomy over his training and race schedule.
A broken collarbone at the Tour putpaid to the rest of his season, and it will likely be almost six months before Vingegaard will be back in action. One team the Dane has been linked with in recent seasons is the emerging Uno-X - a Scandinavian team with a policy of only contracting riders from the region.
And according to Cort - who retires at the end of the season - the change of scenery could be just the boost Vingegaard has been searching for would he be interested in a move away from the Dutch team.
“I think it's not impossible,” Cort said on the Domestique Hotseat Podcast. “Uno-X is a team that's growing now, so they also have to look at the big riders.
“If he is one of them, it does obviously require some budget increase, but hopefully the team, or the guys behind the team, are ready for that. It could be very, very interesting, I think, to have him on Uno-X.”

Uno-X continue to grow as Vingegaard speculation continues

With the team's sporting ambitions and financial capabilities on the rise, a marquee signing further down the road is certainly a possibility. But how would it make sense to Vingegaard to join a team with little experience in leading general classification battles?
Cort suggests that the challenge of elevating a smaller team is something Vingegaard could find motivation from, noting that the change of pace can be good for his career.
“I do think that can be, maybe not all riders are searching for that, but for some riders at a certain point in their career it could be something that they want to do and try.
“You're never going to get away from the pressure. Even if you're kind of going to a little bit smaller team, then you're just being the biggest guy by far, so you'll still be the centre of attention."
A chance to re-draw the map of his latter seasons as a professional is something that Cort thinks should be of interest.
He added: “But if you start somewhere fresh, that's the time maybe you can redraw who you are and what you want to do as a rider. If he has been, I don't know, chasing the Tour too much or fighting with Tadej, trying some new stuff out."

Fresh air and a new start

“I don't know what the team wants or what Jonas wants, but it is a possibility that he could get some fresh air and a new start.”
One thing that makes the team unique is their shared languages, with riders only from Norway and Denmark, meaning that different social groups and cultures within the team are less defined than in most other WorldTour outfits.
“There are no barriers, no groups inside the team,” he explained. “There's no Italian sitting speaking Italian, Spanish, or it could be like a Danish group and English group or something. Everybody always knows what's going on.
“I think it is easier to give that last two percent maybe when you're doing it for a friend rather than maybe just a teammate.”
